Overview

About 20 minutes south of Tulum, we have the opportunity to enjoy an incredible bird diversity, learn about the current Maya culture and the ancient Maya civilization as we walk and look for birds in the village and archaeological site of Muyil.

We explore different habitats in the village with different types of vegetation: mature semi-deciduous jungle in the archaeological site of Muyil and some fresh water wetlands as we walk through flooded jungle using a boardwalk until we reach a fresh water lagoon.

On this tour it is possible to identify from 40 to 80 species of birds (depending on the time of the year).

There is also the possibility to add a boat trip across two lagoons and a lazy river floating experience to this tour.

Please be aware that if you are the only client who booked the tour, we will have to either cancel your reservation or change your reservation to a private tour (230usd)

Knowledgeable and patient guides with Claudio and Rodolfo!

Claudio and Rodolfo were fabulous guides. Claudio was our guide and had an excellent knowledge of bird species in the area, helping us recognize and distinguish among small differences among related species and approaching wildlife with appreciation and respect. We were a mixed group including people at a variety of ages and experience levels with birding, and Claudio was very patient with my elderly father who is hard of hearing. He ensured we all got to see the birds once spotted and we enjoyed helping him find good angles for his camera (the rest of us were just using binoculars so we enjoyed getting to see the images). Some of our party noted that they have had bird guides in the past who would make outrageous and inaccurate claims, and this was not at all the case for Claudio and Rodolfo. Highly recommended!
The best experience ever

It was an incredible experience from start to finish, very good treatment by the agency. I absolutely recommend doing this activity, all the team is very prepared and with a great knowledge of the area. Without a doubt, Mexico has wonderful landscapes and nature.
Amazing birding tour that you do not want to miss!!

Miguel and Adam made our honeymoon! My husband is an avid bird watcher and it is often hard for us to find a guide who has the same level of knowledge- Miguel was amazing and truly a delight. He was so kind, gentile and knowledgeable and we learned so much about the local ecology as well as Mexico and it’s rich history- Miguel had a wonderful way of sharing his passion for birding and the environment with us.. but then he flipped a switch and was equally as knowledgeable about the local history of Muyil and the Mayan population that inhabited the region! I am a history enthusiast and Miguel blew me away with his knowledge! Our trip included a wonderful local breakfast, birding, a tour of the ancient site of Muyil and a boating tour of Sian Ka’An nature reserve- compete with a float down a river within the reserve- this is an AMAZING OPPORTUNITY!! If you are a nature lover or avid border- Miguel is your best option for a guide in all of Mexico!!!!
Something different totally worth it.

The idea of bird watching wasn't the top of the activities on my 'things to do' in Tulum, I was kinda skeptical about the tour, but my boyfriend was eager to go for it so I gave it a try. Honestly it was absolutely amazing! Firstly because it's Tulum, anywhere you turn your sight there's some magic. Secondly giving a try to something completely new, interesting and fun to watch all these species of incredible animals some of them endangered and/or endemic, so it's a unique opportunity to be so close to them and enjoy their looks and sounds. And finally our tour guide was the best, Miguel just makes you want to keep watching the birds! The whole team made our day! Such a great new experience and totally worth it! For those looking to go for something different, this is it.
When in Tulum, go birding with Miguel!

When in Tulum, everyone visits the beaches, the ruins, and of course, the cenotes. Incredible birds are at all these places, but not everyone seems to notice them. After going birding one morning with Miguel, my partner and I began to notice and recognize the amazing birds of the region everywhere we went--including Turquoise-browed Mot-mots around Cenotes, Yucatan Jays in the forested edges of Tulum Ruins, the Great Kiskadee couple in our neighborhood in downtown Tulum--which greatly enhanced, deepened, and beautified our overall travel experience. This was in large part thanks the birdwatching tour in Muyil & Sian Ka'an we booked for our first full day in Tulum and Yucatán Peninsula. I'd call myself an avid birder (a pandemic distraction turned everyday practice) and my partner a bird enthusiast. We might have learned a few birds on our own across two weeks, studying our guidebooks and scratching our heads. But Miguel helped us see and hear more quickly, more clearly, and more enjoyably a great more variety of birds, including endemic species, within a relatively short span of time in the field, and he led us to wonderful and interesting places, like down dirt roads around the village of Muyil to bird edge habitats, we would not have otherwise known about or been comfortable going. We witnessed and learned about not only the regions' abundant bird life, but also its diverse history and culture, as well as its biodiversity in a way that seemed very organic and holistic. It was like the greatest outdoor field trip! We were part of a small group that included one other individual, a staff member from Mexico Can Tours who had never been birding before and wanted to expand her knowledge and experience to better support the travel company's mission. I thought this nicely reflected Mexico Can Tours' ethos of traveling with intention. In the end, Birdwatching with Miguel turned out to be a most memorable introduction to the place and one of our most cherished experiences of traveling to Tulum.
